Getting Around Dublin During DTS
We’ve told you where to eat. We’ve told you where to drink. And now we want to tell you how to make the most of your time in Dublin. We want to show off our city. Not just to you, but to your colleagues, your friends and your family – to anyone who will see your Facebook photo albums and Instagram stories. Our city is changing for the better, and we want you to be a part of it.
One of Dublin’s more unique features as a European capital is that, despite its popularity within the international community and its hastily growing identity as a technology hub, Ireland’s capital is relatively small compared to similarly influential European capitals.
When we spoke of marketing, we learned that regardless of the size of the audience, it’s who’s in the audience that counts. I suppose the same could be considered for cities; in particular, Dublin. So although the home of Guinness, U2 and Oscar Wilde covers an area of land just short of 120km squared, there’s a lot to do in Dublin, so you better be sure you use your time wisely.
The most practical thing about Dublin’s modest size is that you can walk to and from pretty much anywhere within half an hour. And where this really comes in to play for visitors attending DTS is that you’ll be based in the Convention Centre Dublin, strategically positioned in the heart of the city.
But if walking isn’t for you – or if winter bleeds deep into February – you may want to familiarise yourself with Dublin’s travel options during your stay.
Public Transport Options
DART (Dublin Area Rapid Transit)
One of Irish Rail’s most prized productions is Dublin’s exclusive rail service. With stations covering commuters from some of Dublin’s scenic suburbs (such as Howth and Bray) and serving the heart of the city centre, the DART can be your best friend if you have far places to be or you want to catch sight of Dublin’s stunning coastline. DTS is located just a few hundred yards from Connolly station, meaning quick and easy access to both ends of Dublin is just a short walk away. What’s great about Dublin’s bus service is its ability to cover almost every nook and cranny of county Dublin. Transporting more passengers than any other public transport system in the country, Dublin bus will be critical if you plan on moving around the city with as little exposure to weather elements as possible. A Dublin Bus stop is located on the doorstep of the Convention Centre, meaning easy access to the whole city. Dublin bus serves 110 routes, many of which cross over in order to help you get to where you need to go. Like Irish Rail, be sure to download the Dublin Bus App to help plan your journeys.
Dublin’s very own city centre tram system is brilliant for getting to and from some of Dublin’s iconic sights. With a stop just a five minute walk from the Convention Centre; the Luas will give you affordable access to famous locations including the National Art and Design Museum, Stephen’s Green, Dundrum Shopping Centre and the majority of Dublin’s financial district and Silicon Docks. And of course, you guessed it, there’s a Luas app to help you through it.
Other Useful Apps
If you miss your train, bus or tram and you’re stuck on the far side of the city, but there’s a talk at DTS you cannot miss, you can always count on a taxi. The Hailo app will allow you to request a taxi to your position, follow its movements and even pay through an online account, so you don’t have to fumble around with cash. Hailo also guarantees you a fully registered driver, so you know you’re in safe hands.
If you’re planning a multi-destination journey for the day and you’d really rather not have to jump between apps on your phone, the Moovit app basically combines all of the public transport apps mentioned previous and gives you your best option of what to do. For example, if you’re going from the Convention Centre to Howth, Moovit will tell you when to get the Luas, where to get off, when to get the DART and how long the overall journey will take.
Time moves fast, even in a small city. So it’s important to make the most of it during your time at DTS this February 15th and 16th.
